The weather here in Ankara has been AMAZING!! I slept in a little bit, and then I headed to the grocery store to get some ingredients to make homemade granola bars.  One of my roommates doesn’t like chocolate, so I made two different kinds of granola bars.  I first made some raisin/cashew granola bars, and then I also made some chocolate chip/apricot/apple/almond/cashew granola bars!!

This afternoon I took a bus to Kizilay and met up with a friend from church.  We then got on the metro and went to Yenimahalle (means the “new” neighborhood) to get together with a Turkish girl (Ipek). We had Turkish coffee, tea, and some pastries at her house.  It was a nice time of fellowship!  The Turkish girl actually knows English, so it was nice getting to talk with her!  When I arrived home, I had an email saying that she added me on facebook J.  She said that she enjoyed meeting me, and was “glad that she has a new friend”.

It is hard to believe I have been over here 52 days.  It seems just like yesterday that I came over here!  There have been slow times, but for the most part the time has gone by pretty fast.  I will be just getting ready to land in the States four weeks from today!

We found out today, that our game tomorrow is officially postponed because some girls on the other team have swine flu.  So, now we have tomorrow OFF!  I am planning on getting out and enjoying the beautiful weather that we are supposed to have...60 degrees!

Also might make some homemade granola bars :) :)

Have a great rest of the day!

TODAY officially marks exactly one month until I am home :)  I will be flying back into the States for 10 days on December 21st!!!

Not much went on today.  We practiced once and then had the rest of the afternoon to relax.  I did go to the store and got a few ingredients to make some apple walnut bread.  We are supposed to play a game on Monday against Samsun, but as of right now the game is postponed, because there are some girls on the team that have swine flu.

Okay, well g-night all!

Shout out the the LADY FLAMES!! They are playing in the women's basketball championship of the Navy Classic tonight :)

Heart Hospital! 11/20/2009

I experienced a few new things yesterday.  First, was going to a heart hospital!  The Turkish Federation wanted more tests on all of us, for their records, so we all had to go and get another EKG done, and then we also had to get an ultrasound done on our heart.  When I first got to Turkey, I had to get a physical, but they wanted some more in depth testing done on our hearts to make sure everything was okay  I have had an EKG done, but never an ultrasound of my heart.  It was interesting to hear and watch my heart pump.  Everything checked out great!

The second thing that I experienced was having to put on plastic over my shoes.  As we entered the hospital, they have bins at the door, and we were required to cover our shoes!  I thought it was pretty interesting.

The third thing was something I did not really experience, but something that I saw.  I know all of you are aware of the swine flu.  Well, over her people have been going crazy.  I guess a lot of Turks are fearful of things in general, so everyone is pretty scared of H1N1.  I have been starting to see people wearing masks!  It is not an everyday sight, so it catches my eye when I see it.

We scrimmaged the junior boy’s basketball team last night.  It wasn’t really much of a game.  It was nice to be able to play rather than practice (it has been a long week of practice)!!

Today, we had two practices again!  This evening, I had a parent of one of the younger girls (on a different team) tell me in broken English that her daughter has enjoyed watching me play.  She said she wants to have me over to the house for dinner sometime…pretty awesome!!  She went on to say that her daughter shows her pictures of me and my sisters (on Facebook )!  I always make it a point to talk to the younger girls, at least say hi, and try to give them high fives.  They usually practice right before our evening practice.

Well, I am going to read some and then hit the sack!  The Lady Flames are getting ready to play in about an hour, so I think I am going to try to listen in J Normally I am not able to listen to the games, because it is 2:00 in the morning over here, but since the game is at 4:00 I will be able to!

Have a great weekend!!

busy day :) 11/19/2009

Today was a busy and interesting day!  I am going to get to bed, so I will post tomorrow :)

Goat Meat ?!? 11/18/2009

We practiced twice again today!

I think winter weather is approaching Ankara.  Today it stayed in the 30's for most of the day!  I enjoy cold weather and hot weather, so I like it! This morning I pulled out my gloves and headband :)

So you are probably wandering why my title is "Goat Meat".  Well, you see for lunch we had some mystery meat served to us.  It was meat in a tomato type sauce, served with yogurt.  I didn't really think too much of the meat to be honest.  I knew it tasted a little different, but figured it was because of the tomato sauce.  One of the girls on my team, Jo, who is from Kenya tells us as soon as she tastes it, "Guys this is goat meat!"  She said she eats goat all of the time, and said she knows the taste.  She said, "I know the difference between beef and goat and this is definitely beef; I promise!" Then, Linds eats some and says, "this is definitely not beef," and in this country it can't be pork, so there are not too many other options to choose from besides maybe lamb (sheep) or goat.  So, I guess I ate some goat today, but I must say that it tasted pretty good :)!

Prayer Request: Jo is not feeling well at all.  I think she may have the flu! She has a temperature, aches all over, and is coughing.  Pray that she will be able to get over it pretty quick, and that those of us who are around her are able to stay healthy!

back to work :) 11/17/2009

Today we got back on the practice floor.  I found out that we do not play until next Monday (normally we play Saturday or Sunday).  This week we will be preparing for Samsun!  They are a good team, so if we get a "W" that would be good for us :)

We only practiced once today, and then we have two practices tomorrow.  This evening I walked to the store and got a few things.  I have enjoyed my walks!  It is a nice time to think, pray, and reflect.  I ate on campus for supper, and then after supper I came home and made some homemade chocolate chip bread!  It was my first time trying it, and it turned out good!

Verse of the day:
"Humble yourselves , therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.  Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."
1 Peter 5:6-7

I posted some pics under the "Pictures" tab!  Enjoy :)  The pictures are not the cleare

Today we had off! The day has gone by extremely FAST!  I slept in until 12:00, which felt great!  I did 3 loads of laundry and then I walked to the store to get ingredients to make chicken and dumplings.  I bought a whole chicken, some garlic, fresh parsley, onion, and potatoes to make mashed potatoes.  This was my first time making chicken and dumplings from scratch, and they turned out great!  I will post a picture below J

I was doing some reading, and thought I would share a few verses that stuck out to me:

Ecclesiastes 7:13-

“Consider what God has done: Who can straighten what he has made crooked? When times are good be happy; but when times are bad, consider: God has made the one as well as the other.  Therefore, a man cannot discover anything about his future.”

God knows what is best and he already knows what is going to happen.  It is comforting to me to know that we do not have to worry about tomorrow, because the Lord holds tomorrow in His hands.

Zechariah 4:8

“Not by might not by power, but by my spirit, says the Lord Almighty.”

I also just recently bought the new Kutless CD entitled “It Is Well”!  It is their new worship CD, and it is great!  I like every single one of the songs!  Below are the words to one of the songs, that I thought you all might enjoy.

“What Faith Can Do” Lyrics

 Everybody falls sometimes

Gotta find the strength to rise

From the ashes and make a new beginning

Anyone can feel the ache

You think it’s more than you can take

But you are stronger, stronger than you know

Don’t you give up now

The sun will soon be shining

You gotta face the clouds

To find the silver lining

I’ve seen dreams that move the mountains

Hope that doesn’t ever end

Even when the sky is falling

And I’ve seen miracles just happen

Silent prayers get answered

Broken hearts become brand new

That’s what faith can do

It doesn’t matter what you’ve heard

Impossible is not a word

It’s just a reason for someone not to try

Everybody’s scared to death

When they decide to take that step

Out on the water

It’ll be alright

Life is so much more

Than just what your eyes are seeing

You will find your way

If you keep believing

I’ve seen dreams that move the mountains

Hope that doesn’t ever end

Even when the sky is falling

And I’ve seen miracles just happen

Silent prayers get answered

Broken hearts become brand new

That’s what faith can do

Overcome the odds

You do have a chance

(That’s what faith can do)

When the world says you can’t

It’ll tell you that you can!

I’ve seen dreams that move the mountains

Hope that doesn’t ever end

Even when the sky is falling

And I’ve seen miracles just happen

Silent prayers get answered

Broken hearts become brand new

That’s what faith can do

Even if you fall sometimes

You will have the strength to rise

 God bless!

I will post pictures from the Adana trip probably tomorrow! I didn't get around to posting them today.

We just got home from the trip at 1:45 a.m.  I am posting the blog that I wrote on the bus ride home:

I can announce that we WON our first game!!!  It is so nice to be able to finally get a “W” in the win column.  Right now I am writing from the bus.  After the game we went out to eat at a restaurant near the gym.  Susie and Ali (both agents) came along and ate with us, which was nice.  I had tavuk (chicken) kebab (on a stick).  The food was great!  When I got back on the bus I finished up another Ted Dekker book called “When Heaven Weeps”.  The book was tremendous!!  If you are looking for a thought provoking book, and a book that you can’t keep down once you start, then this is it!

Well, it is 7:00 p.m. and I am predicting we won’t get back to Ankara until 2:00 a.m.  Thankfully, coach gave us tomorrow off which is really nice!  I will probably be sleeping for until mid morning.

Tonight the game was so physical!  It is probably the most physical one yet!  I felt like I was on the floor a lot and that I had been through a battle after the game.  It is amazing what they let the girls get by with over here.  After the game, Ali and Sooz commented to me how physical it was out there.  I can definitely say I agree with them.  It will be interesting to see if I am sore tomorrow morning when I wake up or when I get off the bus in seven hours.

Below is a poem that a friend of mine over here sent me!  I thought it was pretty neat, and so I thought I would share it with you!

SOMETIMES (by Polly in France)

Sometimes I feel weak and fragile,
But then I read about His incomparably great power
For us who believe.
That power is like the working of His mighty strength,
Which He exerted in Christ
When He raised him from the dead.
And He strengthens me.

Sometimes I feel so tired,
And wonder if this is what burnout is.
And then Jesus says to me,
“Come to me;
You are weary and burdened;
I will give you rest.”
And He does.

Sometimes I’m homesick,
But I know that a sacrifice isn’t meant to be easy.
Jesus said, “And everyone who has left houses
Or brothers or sisters or father or mother
Or children or fields
For my sake
Will receive a hundred times as much
And will inherit eternal life.”
And I believe His promise.

Sometimes it feels like we’ve been here for so long,
And yet we’re just getting started.
Then I’m reminded that
Since through God’s mercy
We have this ministry,
We do not lose heart.
That even if our gospel is veiled,
It is veiled to those who are perishing.
That His grace is reaching more and more people.
So we fix our eyes not on what is seen,
But on what is unseen.
For what is seen is temporary,
But what is unseen is eternal.

Sometimes I think I should have said this to “Aïcha”
Instead of that
And maybe I shouldn’t have done that.
And then I realize
That those things aren’t going to save her
Or keep her from Him,
But it is only God who makes things grow.
She’s not in my hands;
She is in His.

Sometimes I listen to my neighbors partying
And wonder what they’re laughing about
While I sit in my apartment,
So pensive and serious.
Then I understand that they make merry because
Tomorrow they die.
And I understand that it’s not wrong to feel this way,
To turn my laughter to mourning and my joy to gloom;
I humble myself before the Lord, and he lifts me up.

Sometimes I try so hard to blend in
That I am hidden.
Then I remember that I’m supposed
To become all things to all people
That I may by all means save some.
But also, a city on a hill cannot be hidden.
Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl.
Instead they put it on its stand,
And it gives light to everyone in the house.
So in the same way,
I need to let my light shine before others,
That they may see my good deeds
And praise my Father in heaven.

Sometimes I put in a CD
And listen to the words,
“What will people say if they hear that I’m a Jesus freak?
What will people do if they find out it’s true?”
I am surprised that I identify with this.
How is that possible, since I am a worker?
I have to remind myself
That God did not give me a spirit of timidity,
But a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.
May I not to be ashamed to testify about my Lord!

Sometimes I don’t understand what is happening.
Then I need understanding and discernment.
For my struggle is not against flesh and blood,
But against the rulers,
Against the authorities,
Against the powers of this dark world
And against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Sometimes I wonder what I’m doing here.
But then I am comforted that
In Him I was also chosen,
Having been predestined according to the plan of Him
Who works out everything
In conformity with the purpose of His will.

Sometimes I feel like I’m wasting my time.
But the Holy Spirit affirms me:
“Be steadfast, immovable,
Always abounding in the work of the Lord,
Knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.”

Sometimes when I pray
I feel like I’m talking to myself.
But I love the Lord,
Because He hears my voice and my supplications.
Because He has inclined His ear to me
Therefore I shall call upon Him
As long as I live.

Sometimes I hear about people
Coming to Christ in other parts of the world.
And I wonder,
“Does God do miracles in Marseille?”
Declare his glory among the nations,
His marvelous deeds among all peoples.
His miracles are not limited to space or time.
So I wait for the Lord;
He will exalt us to possess the land.

Sometimes I am overwhelmed
In the details.
Then I look at the big picture:
Continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling,
For it is God who works in you
To will and to act according to his good purpose.
Do everything without complaining or arguing,
So that you may become blameless and pure,
Children of God without fault
In a crooked and depraved generation,
In which you shine like stars in the universe
As you hold out the word of life.

Sometimes I fear that a church will never be planted here.
So I tell the mountain to jump into the Mediterranean Sea.
This is the confidence I have in approaching God:
That I am asking according to his will.
He hears me.
And since I know that He hears me—
whatever I ask—
I know that I have what I asked of him.
Praise God!

I wasn’t able to post a blog yesterday, because the internet in my room is not working right.  I have a little bit of time this morning between breakfast and lunch, so I thought I would send you an update.

Congrats to the Lady Flames for getting a WIN!!

Rewind to Friday night:

Friday was great! I met up with some friends from church in the evening after practice.  I went out to eat with one of them near where they live.  It was really neat, because it was a little family run restaurant, so the people are really friendly.  The girl I ate with is learning Turkish, so she us able to put it into practice.  After supper we walked next door to her apartment and met up with one of her roommates.  We made some oatmeal chocolate chip walnut raisin cookies, which turned out great!  I hung out there until about 9:00 and then headed back to my apartment.  My friends live in Kizilay, which is about a 15-20 minute bus ride.  I felt pretty adventurous, that I would get on a bus by myself and be able to get there and back by myself!

Now on to Saturday:

On Saturday morning we left at 8:30 a.m. for Adana.  Adana is near the Mediterranean Sea, which is pretty neat.  Unfortunately we will not be able to see the Sea until we play Mersin (about 45 minutes South of Adana and right on the water).  I am excited to see it and hopefully take some pictures!!  The road trip to Adana was really pretty!  We traveled through some Mountains, which reminded me a lot of Gatlinburg…beautiful!!  You could see snow capped mountains, and it even snowed a little bit on our trip.  I wasn’t really able to get any good pictures traveling down, because the windows were not clear because of the snow and rain.  We stopped once for some tea and toast and then a couple hours later we got some lunch.  It was kind of like a cabin in the mountains that was a restaurant, so it was really nice!  We also were able to see a salt lake.  I heard that in some places the salt is so thick that you can “walk on the water”.  Pretty neat I think!

We arrived in Adana around 4:00 in the afternoon.  We went straight to practice, which entailed some shooting and playing.  After practice we had about an hour to explore the city a little bit or do whatever, and then have supper.  I stayed in the hotel so I could talk with my family and shower.  For supper we ate in the hotel and had chicken kebab, beef, rice, soup, and vegetables.  When we finished supper, our coach told us that there was a surprise for us down in the lobby of our hotel.  When we all walked down there, we saw who it was…our agent!!! Well, three of us (Jo, Sha, and me) have the same agent, and then Linds has someone else.  I knew she was coming to our game, but didn’t know when we would see her.  It was so fun to get to hang out and talk about our different experiences so far.  After a couple hours of talking, we all went back up to our rooms.

Normally we have wireless in our rooms, which is amazing!!  For some reason though, the wireless is not working in my room.  So, I went back down to the lobby so I could talk with my family on Skype.  When I went back down, I ended up talking with Susie (my agent) for a while!  It is always nice to be able to talk to like- minded people.  Susie truly looks at her job as a ministry, and for that I am extremely thankful!  Thanks Sooz J.  I also was able to catch up with my sisters and parents.  My sisters took a big practice test for their boards that they will have to take in February to become licensed nurses.  They both did really well…congrats!!!

I got up to my room around 11:00 p.m.  I read for a little bit to wind down, and then went to bed!

Sunday (today): finally caught up ;)

Today we had breakfast at 9:00.  Let me just say, that there was quite the spread of things this morning.  I’ll name some of the things they had: sausage (beef), potatoes, eggs, hard boiled eggs, lunch meat, bread (so many different kinds), bagels, pastries, olives, cheese (all kinds), apricots, dried figs, olives, cereal, and fresh squeezed orange juice.  To top it all off they had an actual honeycomb on a board type thing, so we had some extremely fresh honey for our bread!!  One thing I have learned while over here is that their breakfasts are pretty amazing J.

Right now we have a few hours until we meet back up for lunch at 12:00.  I decided I would be productive and blog some!  This afternoon we play Botas at 3:30 p.m.  They have a few Americans on their team.  It was pretty neat, because I was able to catch up with Sharnee Zoll, who used to play for Virginia.  For those of you who don’t know, we played Virginia my sophomore year at Liberty.  It was such an exciting game, and we won the game by 5 points.  Sharnee was on the team that we beat.  It was fun to catch up a little bit yesterday after practice.

I will let you know how we do this afternoon.  We have a 7-hour bus trip back tonight, so we won’t get in until the morning sometime!  I will probably wait to post until Monday!  Hope you all have a great Sunday J!!!
